The Department’s Philosophy and Principle

The department  holds a unitary view, the view that every student has different abilities and talents, and something valuable to contribute. The teacher should encourage active participation in the classroom. Diversity increases the scope and extent of knowledge. It is the responsibility of the teacher to respect those differences and help the students to understand that as well, both about themselves and others.in imparting the four skills of language acquisition and subsequent mastery of the same, the teachers in the department choose to be  enthusiastic about the subject they are teaching, and should transmit that enthusiasm for the subject and for the love of learning, in general, to the student. Every member of the department is  an ardent supporter of the proponents of a holistic education. This is informed by the premise that teaching should enhance a student’s moral, social, physical and intellectual well being. No doubt, teaching is an important profession whose responsibility and privilege are great.  An informed teacher should be very thoughtful about the messages that are passed along in the classroom. The department believe that it is the responsibility of the teacher to never lose sight of the mission of education and to treat the subject with the reverence it deserves.

Teaching in itself is a learning experience and a good teacher should strive for excellence by keeping abreast with his field, attending conferences and workshops. A teacher should be open to new techniques and methods and still have confidence and faith in what he already knows. Teaching, like learning, is a life-long process. One should endeavour to be constantly growing and building both subject knowledge and pedagogical skills. Scholarly inquiry and teaching are interdependent and rely on each other for their mutual development.

English -Language- A Compulsory Subject for All Students

Unlike other subjects that are sometimes tailor-made to fit into a specific career, broadly speaking, English Language is an ancillary subject, yet in self contradicting terms, a compulsory subject. No pun intended. This subject is, if you like, a bridge to the vista of all possible courses and unless a student walks across the bridge successfully, then he/she is bound to find a road block, a brick wall that stands between the intended course of study and himself/herself- metaphorically speaking.

Our point? That there is no way around English Language. One must sit for it and do well.

THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AT OANJH

THE school, and obviously, the English Department follow the Edexcel International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) in English Language and Literature (Specification A). This design is part of a suite of IGCSE qualifications offered by Edexcel.

Our teaching and instruction, including the pedagogy methodologies throughout year 7 up to year 11 aims at helping the learner to adapt and be able to handle The Edexcel IGCSE in English Language at year 11. Our classroom and learning modes includes a wide range of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

The reading requirements of the course are covered in the Edexcel Anthology for IGCSE English Language (Specification A) and IGCSE English Literature, for use throughout the course and in the examination.

Key subject aims

The learning of English instills and enables students to:

  • Develop their understanding of the spoken word and the capacity to participate effectively in a variety of speaking and listening activities;
  • Develop the ability to read, understand and respond to material from a variety of sources;
  • To recognise and appreciate themes and attitudes and the ways in which writers achieve their effects;
  • Develop the ability to construct and convey meaning in written language, matching style to audience and purpose.
