Year 8 and 9 Oratorical Competition

The year 8/9 had their Inter house oratorical competition on Friday  5th February, 2010. On the menu was a rendition of an excerpt from  Old Major’s Speech in George Orwell’s Animal Farm, and an array of  impromptu speeches. This time round, the Poetry category was left to our five  participants, in the February 13th 2010 Inter School Verse Speaking  Competition, to simulate before a live audience what they will present on the  material day.  As expected we had an invigorating performance by the Junior  Students, especially in the Impromptu Category.

THE 16TH ANNUAL MSMUN REPORT FOR THE PERIOD 26TH -29TH JANUARY  2010

How they say, the more things change, the more  they remain the same. For  OAN Junior High, it was another win, another  resounding success, another feather in our cap. Like in the past, our stellar  performance was once again a signature of our commitment to  Excellency.

Our boys  and girls did us proud once more: what with upholding discipline and moral  values, doing their thing with singular attention and working the conferences  with almost a religious zeal! When the 4 day conference closed the curtains, it  was a triumphant moment, knowing that we had, once again done our  part.

And so it  comes to pass that all roads led to UN headquarters at Gigiri, Nairobi. Why?  Hello? It’s the MSMUN week! Every school struggles for a place in this one -  week -long event held at the UN Headquarters. Throughout term one, students  spend their time learning the ropes- the conference procedures at the UN. And  when time is ripe, they all meet at the headquarters to do their  thing.

Oan Junior  high was suitably represented by an able 60 plus delegates, made of 11  delegations, each representing a country with a problem that the UN can handle.  Then our 4 head securitaries had a field day manning the conduct, and keeping  law and order. Our 3 chairs literally ran the show while the press corps kept  everyone informed through the DAILY INFORMER newspaper published by the  MSMUN.

The  journey towards the 16th Annual MSMUN began  shortly after the school opened in September 2008. The program involves rigorous  interview, auditioning, training and reviews. Here below is a testimonial agenda  to show what the students go through to ensure that all the participants learn  and master the rules, regulations,, procedures,  mien and protocols adhered to  by the real delegates that the students emulate during the actual  conferences.

Here below  is a breakdown of the MSMUN training schedule that involved the teachers and the  students.

During the conferences, the students, oops! Sorry, the delegates and  ambassadors, worked hard, mastered all the skills and energy for negotiation to  lobby, to convince, persuade and get help rest their resolutions failed to see  the light of the day.

Now out of  the 11 resolutions we came up with, we got all of them passing the RAC and going  on for parliamentary debates.

Five of  our resolutions went on to GA level, finally getting the merged resolutions of  Cape Verde sailing through to best resolutions award.  Hats off to the team of  Cape Verde led by Warda

We must  reflect on the tenet that we operated on: the conferences have become so  popular, attracting more international countries every year and therefore  numbers becoming reduced for the local delegates but we pride in the fact that  we had the highest number of countries, 11, followed by 8 countries for our  competitors. We had 3 seats (Junior Chair) and 4 securitaries and 3 press corps.  Basically, we had the highest number of positions in every aspect, so to speak

NB.(one  more event to wrap up the term: the year 8/9 debate coming up on wed  3rd March  2010)
