Learning Support
LEARNING SUPPORT DEPARTMENT
Introduction
From year 7 to 11, Oshwal Academy Nairobi Junior High offers support to students with special learning needs. The programme assists students experiencing difficulty with literacy and numeracy skills and other identified learning difficulties.
The programs emphasize skills and competencies, which enable students to participate as fully as possible in their regular classroom settings. Students work with the learning support staff on an individual or small group basis in withdrawal situations.
Currently, the programme has 39 students who are receiving supplementary support in literacy or numeracy or both.
The Learning Support Program aims to help each pupil to work to his/her potential. We believe that all children can learn and do so in different styles and at different rates
Identification of students
- Concerns about the pupil can be raised by class/subject teacher, parent or poor exam results.
- Checklists are filled by teachers to identify areas of concern upon which a full diagnostic assessment by the Specialist Consultant in school or second referral by an outside agency follows.
- If a child demonstrates difficulty in coping with the demands of the curriculum, this necessitates feedback to parents and enrollment into the programme.
The protocol
- Pupils enroll into the programme for literacy or numeracy or both
- Pupils are asked to drop a language and choose learning support to receive extra help
- Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for each student are formulated
- Pupils are provided support in small groups
- Some support is provided in form of in-class support (ICS)/integrated setting (IS)
- IEPs are reviewed at the end of each term and new targets are set
- An end of term report on effort/achievement sent to parents
Partnership with Parents
A close partnership between school and home is essential if students are to make progress. Parents will always be fully involved and informed of their child‛s special educational needs. Parents are also central in supporting the measures taken by school.
We always consult and preferably meet with parents before deciding on any learning support programme. This may include recommendations for support at home e.g. paired reading or spelling, monitoring of homework or help with organisation.
Parents are welcome to make contact with LS staff at any time and depending on the pupil’s need, they may be in quite regular contact.
